Pope Beats Odds And Field With Single Swing

Chesapeake, VA – On Saturday, October 14 Gary Pope pulled a sand wedge out of his bag with the fate of his team at stake. Unbeknownst to Gary at the time was that he was tied for second with defending champion Captain John Warren's team at –11, and only one stroke behind the first place powerhouses "Team O'Hearn".

On Hole # 8 at Chesapeake Golf Club, the 18 th hole for their round of The 2006 Oosterwyk Golf Classic, Gary stepped up to the tee box with teammates Kevin Teegarden, Ron Teegarden and Roger Davis watching. Gary brought his club back and forth along the plane smoothly sending the ball high into the air. According to an enthusiastic Roger Davis, the ball landed approximately eight inches past the pin, rolled back and fell into the cup for a hole-in-one! It was only later when they turned in their cards that they found out that they had leap-frogged past "Team O'Hearn" for the win.

Also coming as a surprise to Gary was the fact that this was a Titleist Challenge Hole. By acing the hole Gary won a TaylorMade r7 Driver that was donated by Rich Oosterwyk and Romel Ramos. The driver, which retailed around $399, was only one of two clubs won by Gary that day.

Before the tournament started, Gary was coaxed into buying a chance in the Putting Contest. As the last player to make an attempt, Gary stepped up, a bit rushed by with the tournament about to start, and sank a 75' putt to win a Mizunno Hybrid club. As a side note, Gary was the "closest-to-the-pin" for the Chipping Contest and won a sleeve of Titleist Pro V1 golf balls.
